Nostalgia

August 25, 2011

To be perfectly honest what can beat a pot of tea and a cake on a dreary day in London? With Autumn practically on our doorsteps we have been baking cakes that our Grandmothers would be proud of …. think luscious lemon bars and carrot cake.

Over the past few weeks in the shops our Carrot Cake, Frangipane Tarts  and Scones have literally been picking themselves up and walking out of the door, with some of the sweeter treats being ignored. I put it down to nostaglia or rather home comforts – everyone can remember baking their favourite cake on a Sunday afternoon and devouring it as soon as it was out of the oven! It is this feeling of nostalgia that we can’t seem to tear ourselves away from in the shops, everything that we have in the shops whether it be an alarm clock or sundial cake stand evokes a feeling or memory and this is what we want our cakes to do to.

So tell us what’s your favourite baking memory or receipe ..let us know and we might give it a whirl in the shops!

Learn our secrets…

August 16, 2011

With the cookbook just weeks away from publication we thought the time had come to share our secrets.

So we’ve finally got our act together and put together a series of Baking classes which focus on all our favourites from the shops . ..everything from Red Velvet Cupcakes to our Triple Chocolate Cake.

This Thursday at Theobalds Road we are hosting a Cupcake Decorating class where students will learn the art of piping & decoration over 2.5 hours with one of the Pastry team. The class involves alot of tasting, so we advise to come on an empty stomach!

On Friday it is week two of our Baking the Book class – this week Bea will be making our infamous Triple Chocolate Cake (layers and layers of chocolate sponge, chocolate ganache and chooclate buttercream) and one of our favourites “Snickerdoodles” (cinnamon sugar cookies).

The last places are filling up so email cakes@beasofbloomsbury.com for availability!

On Saturday we were lucky enough to host a pop up Afternoon Tea at a house which time forgot . . . .Dennis Severs.

Throughout the day we feasted on Baileys Trifle, Mini Victoria Sponge Cakes, Marshmallows, Lemon Bars, Scones and Brownies. Thank goodness for the stairs or else we wouldn’t have been able to move!

A big thank you to David and Mick at Dennis Severs House for their generous hospitality and kindness. The house is open to the public on Sundays and I would really recommend going.

On Saturday we will be hosting our first pop up tea party of the year at Dennis Severs House! The house has been beautiful restored to fit previous centuries, and I can honestly say it is one of the most intriguing spaces I have ever been to. Guests will be taken on a silent tour of the house before sitting down to a bespoke teatime menu, served in either the basement kitchen , the parlour or my favourite the drawing room.

There are still a few places left for the 12pm & 5.30pm sittings so email us at cakes@beasofbloomsbury.com

So it has taken us just over 3 years to re-discover our blog!

Back in the good old days we had no more than 10 customers a day, Bea worked all day and night in the kitchen and the girls made coffee, answered the phones and emails and even painted the walls. Sadly the piano from Theobalds Road didn’t make the three years, but the shop is still standing!!

The past three years have been a whirlwind, in October 2010 we opened our second location right by St Pauls and this June we helped to open our sister concept Bloomsbury’s cupcakes in Abu Dhabi (yes Abu Dhabi) and hey we even have a cookbook coming out in September!

On Saturday will see us host our first stall at Maltby Street Market (2 doors up from St John Bakery!) where will be selling LOTS of cakes . .expect Bourbon and Square Mile espresso bundt cakes, Peanut Butter and Jam slices (so so good), GIANT meringues and yes there will even be cupcakes.

Stay tuned and we may even update the blog again before 2014!

When one first looks into our shop window, they immediately see the wedding cake models, which are lovely. However, that means people miss the things we have for breakfast:

our fabulous freshly baked muffins (like banana chocolate chip, rhubarb crumb, and wild blueberry)

our greek yogurt with honey and freshly made granola, filled with pecans, coconut, and orange zest

our mini apple tarts and cherry galettes (egg free!)

our american-style scones, super creamy orange and dried cranberry flavoured

and of course the super smooth and fantastic fairtrade and organic coffee from Burgil coffee–famous for their cafe Climpson and Sons in Hackney.

So come in for breakfast, and we hope to add exotic fruit salad (with passionfruit and mango), and perhaps some savoury breakfast items as well!
